Investor's Business Daily - Statkraft, a Norwegian state-owned utility, has opened the world's first osmotic power plant, which generates emissions-free electricity by mixing fresh water and sea water. The prototype plant is driven by osmosis that naturally draws fresh water across a special membrane and toward the seawater side. This creates higher pressure on the seawater side, driving a turbine and producing electricity. Osmotic power, which can be located anywhere where clean freshwater runs into the sea, is seen as less variable than wind or solar energy.
